The Investment Advisors and Stockbrokers Course is a one-month intensive competence course that has been specially designed to equip professionals and intermediaries on the securities market with the skills and knowledge about the operations of securities market in Zambia. After successful completion of the course, course participants should be able to demonstrate competence in the conduct of securities market transactions and should also be able to offer professional advice on matters pertaining to securities market.

The Investment Advisors and Stockbrokers Course have been designed by the industry practitioners for the industry. It is a highly interactive and practical course that brings to the fore relevant pieces of Zambian legislation, various principles and concepts pertaining to the securities market.
The programme draws on the expertise of industry trainers with relevant qualifications and experience in the securities and financial services industry.

The programme is approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Lusaka Stock Exchange Limited (LuSE) as a requisite qualification for one to be licensed as an intermediary on the securities market. The course syllabus has been developed as a collaborative effort between the Zambia College of Pensions and Insurance Trust (ZCPIT), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Lusaka Stock Exchange Limited (LuSE) to fill the skills and knowledge gap in the securities market.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target group for the course include fund managers, accountants, stockbrokers, lawyers, merchant bankers, financial analysts, portfolio managers, investment advisors and intermediaries associated with the securities market.

COURSE COVERAGE

The course consists of sixteen different modules that have been carefully selected and put together so as to enhance the skills and knowledge of learners on matters pertaining to the securities market. These are:

2. Role and Functions of SEC/Securities Law
3. Roles and Functions of the Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE)
4. Anti-Money Laundering
5. Sources of Finance – Equities and Bonds
6. Trading, Clearing and Settlement
7. Professional Ethics/Client Relationship
8. Challenges of the Stock Market
9. Corporate Governance
10. Financial Analysis and Reporting – Contents and Disclosure Requirements
11. Interpretation of Financial Statements
12. Investor Ratios
13. Investment Planning
14. Derivatives in Financial Markets
15. Fund Management
16. Company Valuation

CONTACT AND STUDY HOURS

Recommended contact hours between the trainer and students is two- and-a half hours (2½) hours per unit. The total contact hours are therefore 40 hours. Students are expected to attend at least eighty percent (80%) of the delivered hours. Students are thereafter allowed 10 days – self-study to prepare themselves for the examinations.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

The method of assessment is by written examinations consisting of two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2 – covering the whole syllabus. Students are assessed over two days. The duration per sitting for each paper is three (03) hours.
